IF YOU’VE GOT TO WEAR A JACKET, might as well get one you love to wear. For decades, men have been pushed in the direction of plain, simple outerwear; jackets that said “I’m here to keep you from catching a cold and not much else.” Now in fairness, there’s nothing wrong with owning a couple of classics but these days we need to be looking for excitement and joy in everything, including our coat closets.

TAION, which means “body temperature” in Japanese, is a Tokyo-based brand that has set out to change the way we wear down. The Crew Neck Down Set features detachable sleeves making the garment wearable as a vest, T-shirt or jacket. Taion takes the versatility a step further with this mid-layer garment with its signature heating system, which allows you to adjust the temperature of the vest to over 100 degrees fahrenheit. With a variety of colors to choose from, water repellent exterior, down filling interior and a battery powered heater, the Taion Crew Neck Down Set is the only down vest/jacket you’ll ever need.

GENERAL RESEARCH DESIGNER Kobayashi Setsumasa created Mountain Research as an outlet where he could combine his passion for innovative design with his love for the great outdoors. That message comes through loud and clear with the Wookie JKT Reversible. Although the jacket’s outer surface is 100% wool, the texture is similar to pile or fleece making it very soft to the touch, while the other side of the jacket is 100% nylon. I think this jacket is ideal for a walk through nature; you could stop when you come across a particularly beautiful scene, fold your arms into that warm wool, take in the wonders of nature and if it starts to rain, flip it to the nylon side while you search for cover. When you’re rocking the Wookie in the city or around others, use the oval mask attachment on the hood, which features the phrase “welcome to my mountain”, to keep yourself and others safe.

IF YOU’RE SOMEONE who wants to play the long game with a piece whose character comes with time, the giants of original Japanese jersey Ten C have created the winter jacket for you. Made in Italy with the level of craftsmanship the country is known for, Ten C jackets are designed to mold to the wearer and last a lifetime. The brand’s Arctic Down Parka is a modern take on the classic military N-3B jacket, with the hood and other details true to the original, with a simple YKK zipper closure and press stud flap as opposed to traditional buttons. This Arctic Down Parka will get you through harsh winters for years to come and if you’re a Ten C liner owner, this parka does feature the internal buttons needed to secure it.
